Indie Bookstores Wanted!

I’m looking to expand the listing of midwestern indie bookstores, but I need some help. If you know of an indie bookstore in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, or Wisconsin, please leave a comment with a link to their website so I can get all the details and add them to the list. Thanks!

The list of midwestern book bloggers has been updated as of today.

  1. I’m a bookseller at Lake Forest Book Store — thanks for including us. I have to head out the door in a minute so I don’t have time for the links, but here are some Chicago area (city and suburbs) stores that are missing:
    Glencoe Books (Glencoe, IL)
    The Book Bin (Northbrook, IL)
    Bookends and Beginnings (Evanston, IL)
The Book Table (Oak Park, IL)
Magic Tree Books (Oak Park, IL)
The Bookstore of Glen Ellyn (Glen Ellyn, IL)
    Quimby’s Bookstore (Chicago)
    City Lit Books (Chicago)
    The Book Cellar (Chicago)
    Myopic Books (Chicago)
    Powell’s Books (Chicago)
    Sandmeyer’s Books (Chicago)
Roscoe Books (Chicago) — great store, just opened in November
I’m sure there are others that I’ve forgotten — I’ll let you know.

    • Thanks, I’ll Google for links. Just having names is a great start. All those indies! I live in southern Illinois and have…none.

  2. Milwaukee, WI

Boswell Book Company – in addition to their big selection of mainstream books, they also highlight some local and small press authors.

Outwords Gifts, Coffee, and Books – an LGBT-focused store with a good selection of fic, non-fic, juv/ya, and some NC-17ish items. And coffee :)

Mystery One – a small, mystery-focused bookstore on the east side.

Downtown Books – they buy and sell used books, and there’s a resident cat :)

    Lake Geneva, WI

Breadloaf Bookshop (no website) – a two-room shop on the 2nd floor of what I think was once a church. Not sure if this is still the case, but whenever I’ve bought books here, I’d get a coupon for coffee from Geneva Java, just downstairs.

Wishing Well Bookstore – a children’s bookstore on Center St., south of Main St.

    Cincinnati, OH

Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Hyde Park. There used to be more in the Cincinnati/Kentucky area, but I think this might be the only one still open. My cousins and I have loved this store since we were little. They have a separate children’s store attached, a great music section, and the Brontë Bistro cafe.
